I went by a store today that has closed its doors for good, and I don't know whether to be sad or really ticked off. I feel bad for the small business owner. It kills me each time I see the white piece of paper in the door: closed for business. However, I am also pretty angry. Why?
First of all, too many business owners are too proud to go get help. There are so many resources to help, from the local small business development center to chambers of commerce to SCORE to hired hands like coaches and consultants. Please, if you're struggling, ask for help!
Secondly, I tend get a little sanctimonious or over optimistic, but I always believe there was a little more that could have been done. In the case of the closed shop today, I know that particular business owner has not been out knocking on doors, attending networking functions, or other activities that might have helped. I know it can get very dark and depressing -- I've been there myself! However, before you get to that point, get out there and dig up some business!
Okay, time to get off my high horse. Please, if you see a struggling business, point them toward somebody who can help them.
